Hornby Hogwarts Castle

By all accounts I have read or heard (which isn’t many), this is the nicest looking version of the Hogwarts Castle locomotive from The Hogwarts Express. It’s also the only one which is a castle class tooling, due to a last minute production change to use a hall class in the films. As a bigger fan of the books, I don’t really care about this, and so when I had the chance to pick up the complete original starter set (unopened) for £100, I jumped at the chance. This set had been bought over two decades ago, by the husband of a colleague and friend, and so they were very kind on the price. It’s a beautiful model to my eye, and much nicer than the modern one with an ugly great LED drilled into the front.

Unfortunately, it is a really noisy and grindy runner, and as it has a pancake/ringfield (I don’t really understand) motor it means I can’t take it apart to sort it out as easily as other models. I have been looking at whether I could swap it for a CD motor, which is a popular mod for old ringfields. I have reached out for advice on whether this is possible, but nobody has got back to me. Until I figure this out, I won’t be running it for fear of damaging it irreparably. A shame, but I suppose I’m still learning! Click here for more information on this specific model.
